Chapter nineteen

I felt disturbingly weak, and all I wanted to do was rest up for a moment. But I forced myself to straighten. My weakness had already had consequences, and I had no intention of making them worse.

“Dahlia!” I called out, even as I staggered over to the crumpled form of the woman against the wall.

She’d taken a hell of a blow. I expected her to be broken and bloody, perhaps bleeding out by the moment. But to my surprise and overwhelming relief, the pink-haired woman raised her head at my approach and gave her characteristic smirk.

“Took you long enough,” she said.

I knew in my soul she was right. “Sorry,” I blurted. But I was thinking about what she might say when she reported back to Amara.

I was no hero, and in that first moment when the bear monster had appeared, I had shown it.

It could have been worse. I’d shown a distinct lack of heroism, but the degree of my own self-interest might be still hidden. After all, I had returned to the fight in the end.

Even so, it was a bad enough slip. The best I could do was try to salvage the situation.

“Are you okay?” I added.

Incredibly, the pink haired woman surged to her feet. She glanced down at her blouse, which had been torn to pieces by the bear’s claws, exposing much of the flesh on her side from her ribs down to her hip.

Perhaps my brain was still a bit scrambled by the unexpected fight. I truly did expect to see blood, perhaps a broken rib or two, and maybe a few entrails as well.

But her flesh seemed remarkably intact.

The pink haired woman raised her arms above her head and did a little pirouette as if to show that she was fine.

“See? All good.”

It was only then that I remembered her artificial nature. I felt myself start to relax. “You’re tougher than you look,” I said.

She nodded. “My maker knew what he was doing.” Then she tilted her head to one side as she studied me. “That power of yours. It’s stronger than I was led to believe. Maybe you are more than a level three. Maybe you’re a three and a half, or a little higher.”

I had no response to that. So I just shrugged my shoulders.

“Maybe,” I said. I took a moment to look around at the carnage. “Remember when you said we should just call the police?” I asked her. “Well, I think you’re right.”

Dahlia made a small noise indicating agreement. “Let’s get out of here and do that,” she said.

It wasn’t until we’d made our way back up to the sidewalk and Dahlia was talking to the police that I remembered the lab worker’s wallet. I’d automatically tucked it away when the bear-monster attacked and brought it out while Dahlia was still talking.

It didn’t take long to find what I was looking for. The man had a security card right there in his wallet, in a pocket with a clear plastic front.
